Speculative Design & Branding: Bobbin Bug

“Bobbin Bug” was a hypothetical product I developed branding materials for during a speculative design project. The assignment was largely conceptual, with the challenge of creating an item to solve a modern-day problem with futuristic technology. For this project, I developed a robot device that fixed damaged clothes to combat clothing waste, fast fashion, and overconsumption.

The core objective of Bobbin Bug’s branding was accessibility and versatility to appeal to audiences, young and old, who may struggle with sewing techniques and technology usage. To achieve this, I developed both print and digital materials with the objective of simplicity and straightforward UI. The name and logo for Bobbin Bug were conceptualized with the intent of reducing the stigma of technology being complex and confusing as a way to draw in audiences who may be intimidated by machinery. The linear pattern accenting the materials in this brand set is based on sewing machine stitches to visually reinforce Bobbin Bug’s ultimate goal of reliability and efficiency.

Logo

The first step to creating a brand image for Bobbin Bug was designing an eye-catching logo. Though Bobbin Bug is intended to be an advanced, futuristic piece of technology, it is also meant to be an easy-to-use, accessible tool for busy, everyday people.

To capture this idea and maximize approachability in the logo, I integrated the image of an insect with a yarn ball-shaped body. The intention of using playful, simple imagery in this logo was to create a sense of approachability to audiences who may be intimidated by complex technology.

Brand Identity

Another core aspect of Bobbin Bug’s branding is reliability. Not only do customers want a product that is easy to use, but they also want one that gets the job done, and done right.

In establishing the color palette for Bobbin Bug’s branding, I used a combination of purples and striking warm colors to reflect peace of mind, and confidence respectively. While the cool colors create a sense of ease, the bright yellows and oranges draw the eye and remind viewers that Bobbin Bug will positively impact their lives with top-tier technology.

Linear patterns inspired by sewing machine stitches are also used and serve not only to adorn, but also to reflect the power and precision of technology, reinforcing the idea that Bobbin Bug is a reliable and accurate tool.

Pitch Deck

To consolidate my product proposal, research, and brand identity for Bobbin Bug, I created a pitch deck to familiarize the public with this item and its potential impact. In this pitch deck, I provide reasoning for the branding and each piece of collateral to visualize the potential of this device and its branding.

Digital Interface

To explore concepts of interactivity, I developed a concept for a mobile app to pair with the Bobbin Bug device. The app was created through Figma and served as a tool to program the device to perform repairs.

I also designed an icon system for the app to represent different fabric types, stitches, and damage types to help users better understand app functions and to make navigation more straightforward

Brochure Insert

To create an even clearer line of communication to customers, I designed a simple trifold brochure insert to be included in the Bobbin Bug product packaging. In case customers are still unfamiliar with technology, this brochure provides a simple guide on how to download the app and pair it with the device.

Packaging

Packaging is also a significant aspect of product design. For this hypothetical product, I conceptualized a design for both the initial product packaging, as well as an additional carrying case to store the device in after purchase.

The machine stitch patterns appear on both items to further reinforce ideas of reliability and trustworthiness from the onset.
