I designed this poster and collateral set with a fellow intern at Design Streak Studio for the Spring 2025 Southeast Asian Cultural Festival, hosted by our clients at ISU’s Office of International Engagement with Heartland Community College. The client requested that the flyer visually represent the activities taking place at the festival while keeping the theme of Southeast Asian culture and heritage.

This festival was open to all students from both Illinois State and Heartland, and represented a wide variety of countries, so designing with close consideration to cultural authenticity while keeping subject matter non-specific and was key.  My group focused on designing around the Filipino Tinikling demonstration at the festival- a traditional dance that involves intricate movement around crossed sticks of bamboo. The central information was placed in a bamboo-stick frame as the focal point, accented by geometric decorative elements inspired by traditional Southeast Asian textiles. This poster was chosen by the client and used on both campuses.

Imagery

Because my team was developing branding for an event that was representative of multiple countries and cultures, it was imperative to use imagery that was general enough to represent the region as a whole, but also reflective of the activities included in the festival.

To do this, we used a block accent with decorative patterns inspired by textiles typical in the region. We also added intersecting stalks of bamboo to showcase the Filipino tinikling dance demonstration at the festival.

Poster

Creating a promotional poster was the first step in developing the branding and print collateral for this event. My partner and I combined our initial concepts and consulted our art director for ideas on dynamic layout.

We landed on using a slightly rotated frame around the body text to reflect traditional Filipino Tinikling dance with our decorative textile-inspired patterns as an accent.

Collateral

To further advertise the event, my team made a few other pieces of promotional collateral, inclusing social media/email banners and a a yard sign.

For each piece, it was of high importance to make the title the primary area of focus while also including the accent elements to maintain consistency.
